Homes with four bedrooms are also likely to have multiple bathrooms and many radiators resulting in an above-average hot water demand. So what’s the best boiler for a four-bedroom home? One which can heat multiple radiators and provide water to multiple hot taps simultaneously – without breaking the bank. Sound complicated? Don’t worry – we’ve got you covered!

We’ve prepared everything you need to know to find the best boiler for a four-bedroom home. And, even better than that, we can help you compare quotes to find the most suitable boiler in your local area.

How Much Output Does A Four-Bedroom Home Need?

In addition to the property size and the number of radiators and hot water outlets, there are other things affecting how much output a boiler needs. The property’s insulation, construction materials and windows (both number and type) can all have a difference.

What Is The Best Boiler For A Four-Bedroom Home I

Homes with multiple big windows might have a higher heating demand.

Looking at central heating output, this is how much power each type of boiler would need to generate for houses of different sizes.

Number Of Radiators Combi Boiler System Boiler Regular Boiler
Up to 10 24-27 kW 9-18 kW 9-18 kW
10-15 28-34 kW 18-26 kW 18-26 kW
15-20 35-42 kW 26-40 kW 26-40 kW

As you can see, system boilers and regular boilers require far less power to heat a house with larger heating demands.

What Boiler Type Is Best For A Four-Bedroom Home?

As we’ve already established, a four-bedroom home has a higher-than-average heating demand. There will most likely be at least two bathrooms and probably over 15 radiators across the house. This means that both the demand for central heating and hot water will be high.

With that in mind, a system or regular would be the best option for a four-bedroom home in most circumstances.

Can A Combi Boiler Heat A Four-Bedroom Home?

A combination or ‘combi’ boiler is one which provides hot water and central heating from one single unit. They can provide hot water instantly, taking water directly from the mains water supply, and are known to be one of the most efficient boiler types.

Around 80% of UK homes rely on combi boilers and they are ideal for average sized hoes. However, for four-bedroom homes, especially those on the larger side, combi boilers may not be the best option.

As combi boilers heat water on-demand, rather than storing hot water in a separate tank, they struggle to meet high water demands for hot water. That means for homes where multiple people need hot water at one time, combi boilers may fail to meet demands.

Is A System Or Regular Boiler Better For A Four-Bed Home?

For high hot water demands, a regular or system boiler will be a better choice than a combi boiler. Both system and regular boilers rely on a hot water storage cylinder which stores large volumes of hot water. This means that at any given time, there is hot water to supply to multiple outlets without impacting the flow rate. For four-bedroom houses, this is perfect as it means two or more showers can run at once without impacting the water pressure or flow.

Regular boilers

This boiler type, also known as a conventional or traditional boiler, uses a hot water cylinder as well as a cold water tank – usually stored in the loft.

Regular boilers allow you to programme hot water and heat for set times. However, this also means that if you haven’t programmed it, you will need to wait for the hot water to heat before showering. Once heated, the hot water stays in the hot water cylinder throughout the day, ready for use.

System boilers

System boilers can be viewed as a more modern type of regular boiler. Similarly to regular boilers, they work with a hot water cylinder which can be stored in a cupboard or utility room.

However, unlike regular boilers, they don’t require a separate cold water tank. As a result, this could be a preferable option for many four-bedroom home owners as it is more space efficient and keeps the loft free.

These boilers function with built-in circulating pumps making them generally easier to install than regular boilers as they have fewer components.

Unlike combi boilers, system boilers do not offer instant heat and hot water. They also depend on programming. However, once heated, the cylinder keeps hot water for use across the day.
